Two Leaders, Two Challenges: One Common Thread

I really enjoy the work I get to do with business leaders.

I had two conversations yesterday with leaders who are looking to hire an employee. They were different conversations with leaders in very different circumstances. The fun part is that my experience and professional training fit both, and I really love getting to use what I have been blessed with.

Leader A is an entrepreneur who has built his first business to the point of needing to hire help. He's successful and doing it all on his own. He knows his own time is hindering the growth of his company. He is ready to bring on someone who can answer phones, schedule, and perform other administrative duties. It's the logical next step in scaling his business. He's hired me to help him set up systems and processes to bring on an employee the right way.

Leader B is in a corporation with the systems and processes already in place. There are HR policies, standards, and a team to assist him. But he wanted something more than a checklist. He's new to hiring and needs to build his confidence to select a single hire from two great candidates. We spent time talking through the criteria, personalities, team culture, and potential risks.

My work doesn't dictate who, when, or how either of these leaders will hire. My work is to come alongside leaders as they do their work; never taking over for them but bolstering their confidence and clarity so they can find success.

Yesterday was about hiring. Tomorrow might be strategy, team alignment, or project execution. The topics change, but the challenges are always real, and that’s where the fun begins!

What challenge are you working through right now?

I’d be honored to help you find confidence and clarity in your next step.

Happy New Year! And welcome to 2026. I've got a lot of cool things to share this year but first a reflection on how I could have done better. We were wrapping up our last coaching session of the year when my client asked, "Do you think my business is successful?" I paused, not because I wasn't confident in my answer, but because I was disappointed in myself that he had to even ask the question. I saw it as a poor reflection of my coaching system rather than the status of his endeavors. This...

Road Construction and Your Goals

I was listening to an engineer describe an upcoming road construction project, beginning with how bad the road was currently, and details of the final completed project. He made a great point that is relevant to you this week as you think about goals and outcomes for 2026. "Between an old road and a new road is no road." Sometimes I have to read that twice. We can't have new roads if we don't get rid of the old ones. Edmond's Coffee Creek Rd, in current "no road" condition If we just layer...

Building a business is hard. I've done it a couple of times. Leading a team is not easy. I've got many personal stories to prove it. This is not just my experience; it's the way it is everywhere. Everyone would do it and be successful if it were easy, right? So why are you doing it? If you're reading this, then you’re a leader. Maybe you are building a business, managing a team, guiding a group of volunteers, or just trying to be a better leader to yourself and your family. And you know it's...
