Summer Break Is Over

Back to School and Back to Rhythms

Schools across Oklahoma started back this week and with it comes a change in rhythms. Not just for students and teachers, but for their families as well, which means many of us professionals and entrepreneurs too.

My family bookended our summer with family trips. We started in Utah to visit the Mighty 5 National Parks in Southern Utah. It was a breathtaking week. I didn't take a laptop and disconnected fully. I decided to continue a bit of summer break - so I put a hold on emailing newsletters and most social media.

To end the summer, we spent last week on the beach with my entire family.

Celebrating my parent's 50th wedding anniversary was a blessing and very enjoyable. I pulled out my laptop to do a small amount of work as we wrapped up the week. I think God and His creation reminded me it's okay to let another couple of days go by.

I'm back in the saddle this week and we are adjusting to the rhythms of school, work, theater rehearsals, chores - and all the normal parts of life that must go on.

Seasons

It still feels like summer, but fall is coming. As entrepreneurs in a modern world, we often lose sight of the value of seasons. My friend David Skidmore is always good at reminding me that seasons and their transitions are powerful catalysts in our lives.

Summer has been a season of rest and connection for me. It has been an important season. But now fall is coming. I'm not a farmer but harvest season means long work days and maybe a bit more work than normal - but just for a period of time. Remember winter is coming! I'm looking forward to working hard for a few months before the next season of rest, which I hope comes with snow on the ground and warm fire in the living room.

"Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest." -Proverbs 6:8

Are you in a season of rest or work? Be intentional with your time and energy and let the cycles and rhythms of life power you for the long-term.

"In a season obsessed with more, leaders must learn the art of discerning enough." More is not something we shy away from in modern society. Thanksgiving in particular always lends to more food. I'm sitting here eating my 5th meal of Thanksgiving leftovers, and I'm not even sad about it. It could get tiring soon, but not likely as it begins to take on different forms, such as our favorite: turkey enchiladas. I'm also seeing all the Black Friday advertisements with emails and text messages...

"Most of what fills a day - talks, tasks, and duties - is just noise pretending to be important." - Alan Watts We all know that we need to work on what's important. Yet we all tend to get caught up in the urgent and overwhelming tasks of the day. It takes intentionality to focus on the important. It takes effort and some discomfort at times. I sometimes need a reminder and a refresher on the benefits of these tough actions. One thing I almost always return to is the Eisenhower Matrix, which...

Full calendars, pending deadlines, unread emails, app notifications, and that text message that just dinged. Where's your attention? I observed a brief conversation between two managers this week that got sidetracked at least 5 times by glances at phones. It was like sitting outside my body, realizing that I have the same problem. I think I'm focused and know my priorities, but it quickly gets snatched away by the next ding or shiny idea. Shiny Object Syndrome isn't new. We've been facing it...
