Follow Instagram's Lead

Before I get into this week's content:

I currently have 2 coaching spots open. I'd love to get those filled going into the new year. These one-on-one sessions are the most effective way to find clarity and confidence in your leadership. Let me know if you have someone in mind that could benefit from it.

It's Time For A Reset

You know the first thing the IT Help Desk asks you to do when your computer is acting up? Yeah, turn the thing off and back on again.

It is surprising how many times that works. There are a lot of reasons why this helps, from clearing RAM (Random Access Memory) to resetting hardware and refreshing software. I'm not technical enough to deeply understand all of it, but I know it works often enough that it is always worth a shot before calling IT to ask for help.

The end of the year is a great time to do a reset for your life and leadership, for a lot of the same reasons a computer needs to be powered down and back on again.

As you approach the next 5 weeks I hope you'll take a moment or a week to shut down and restart. It doesn't take much but can have a huge impact as you enter the new year.

Here are a few frameworks that might help you reset:

  1. Clear Your RAM - Our brains get overwhelmed and fill up quickly. Use a journal or notepad to write down your thoughts and lists. Then review to see what needs to stay and what can be cleared away.
  2. Reset Your Hardware - Our bodies need rest. Hopefully, you can take a day to relax and rest. Here's a link to a simple yet powerful breathing exercise to help you physically reset.
  3. Refresh Your Software - Our minds don't use software (unless I've got some AI bots that subscribe…) but we have habits, rituals, and assumptions that drive much of what we do. Go back to that notepad and write some of these down. Are they helpful or hurtful? Use this time to ensure your habits can help you lead in the best way possible, even if it's just about leading yourself!

Finally, check out the new option to reset your Instagram algorithm. I'm not active on Instagram, but this is a great way to reset what is fed to you by the machines. Check out more here: https://about.fb.com/news/2024/11/introducing-recommendations-reset-instagram/

Last Friday was not an efficient day for me. I drove over 25 unnecessary miles, wasting almost an hour just sitting in the truck driving back and forth from Edmond to OKC, back to Edmond, then back across town to another appointment. This extra time and effort bothered me as I was getting ready for the day. I want things to be efficient. That's part of my personality and it has also been trained in me. Systems thinking, production management, and Lean Six Sigma have all been foundational to...

Good Morning, My reflections today have me focused on both the darkest moment in history and the moments that wrecked OKC 30 years ago. 9:02am, April 19th, 1995. I remember feeling the shake and moments later seeing the black plume of smoke rising in the air. I was at home in Edmond. 12 miles away seems like so far, especially as a 12-year-old, but the impact of that blast was felt much further away. Maybe you don’t remember or have lost some specifics of that morning and the days to follow....

The best strategies are simple. This doesn't mean they are easy to implement. But simple means a strategy can be understood and put into practice. Business turnarounds are some of my favorite projects to work on. I enjoy diving into the business and finding ways to improve, increase revenue, reduce expenses, and restructure for effectiveness. These can be incredibly tough jobs but very rewarding. Often I begin with simple approaches for moderate gains. I was reminded of a simple framework for...
