A simple framework for growing your business

The best strategies are simple.

This doesn't mean they are easy to implement. But simple means a strategy can be understood and put into practice.

Business turnarounds are some of my favorite projects to work on. I enjoy diving into the business and finding ways to improve, increase revenue, reduce expenses, and restructure for effectiveness. These can be incredibly tough jobs but very rewarding. Often I begin with simple approaches for moderate gains.

I was reminded of a simple framework for increasing revenue while working with a recent client. We needed to figure out if the business would be sustainable going forward, so we began with revenue.

This framework is one that might benefit you so I want to pass it along.

The idea comes from Jay Abraham, a famous business and marketing expert. He shares it openly. You can find his original PowerPoint resource here.

Abraham's framework says that there are only three ways to grow a business:

  1. Increase the Number of Clients,
  2. Increase the Average Transaction Amount, and
  3. Increase the Frequency of Repurchase.

This simple framework needs some strategy to implement, but it isn't complicated.

There can be numerous ways to find more clients and get them to buy more. Using this framework will be different for each of you. All three can usually be done but depending on your type of business it's best to pick one of the three.

If you want to work on improving your business then sit down and look at your business through Abraham's framework.

You might find a simple path to more success.

Building a business is hard. I've done it a couple of times. Leading a team is not easy. I've got many personal stories to prove it. This is not just my experience; it's the way it is everywhere. Everyone would do it and be successful if it were easy, right? So why are you doing it? If you're reading this, then you’re a leader. Maybe you are building a business, managing a team, guiding a group of volunteers, or just trying to be a better leader to yourself and your family. And you know it's...

"In a season obsessed with more, leaders must learn the art of discerning enough." More is not something we shy away from in modern society. Thanksgiving in particular always lends to more food. I'm sitting here eating my 5th meal of Thanksgiving leftovers, and I'm not even sad about it. It could get tiring soon, but not likely as it begins to take on different forms, such as our favorite: turkey enchiladas. I'm also seeing all the Black Friday advertisements with emails and text messages...

"Most of what fills a day - talks, tasks, and duties - is just noise pretending to be important." - Alan Watts We all know that we need to work on what's important. Yet we all tend to get caught up in the urgent and overwhelming tasks of the day. It takes intentionality to focus on the important. It takes effort and some discomfort at times. I sometimes need a reminder and a refresher on the benefits of these tough actions. One thing I almost always return to is the Eisenhower Matrix, which...
