Darkness and the Future

Good Morning,

My reflections today have me focused on both the darkest moment in history and the moments that wrecked OKC 30 years ago.

9:02am, April 19th, 1995. I remember feeling the shake and moments later seeing the black plume of smoke rising in the air. I was at home in Edmond. 12 miles away seems like so far, especially as a 12-year-old, but the impact of that blast was felt much further away.

Maybe you don’t remember or have lost some specifics of that morning and the days to follow. Check out https://memorialmuseum.com/ or the new documentary on Disney+.

More removed, but even more impactful is the death of Jesus Christ. The Messiah was crucified a couple thousand years ago on a Friday. There was no smoke pillar but the ground shook and darkness filled the daytime.

Darkness is part of this world. Some face it more than others, most of us ignore it until we are paralyzed but the effects. And it can be instantly paralyzing when the intensity is strong.

It's always good to pick up a Bible and read the story, or watch this video: https://youtu.be/_unHmAf7INk?si=kGkjSMtCtHKGLOlT

More than darkness and shaking, something else ties these two events together.

The darkness isn’t the end.

OKC rebuilds and is resilient to succeed (arguably the best small city in America).

Jesus rises from the dead to conquer sin and death.

Leaders are always looking forward.

Whatever darkness you may be facing today is temporary. I pray you find hope and joy in the very near future.

I really enjoy the work I get to do with business leaders. I had two conversations yesterday with leaders who are looking to hire an employee. They were different conversations with leaders in very different circumstances. The fun part is that my experience and professional training fit both, and I really love getting to use what I have been blessed with. Leader A is an entrepreneur who has built his first business to the point of needing to hire help. He's successful and doing it all on his...

It's been almost a year since I last wrote a book review. Most of my past reviews can be found on edmondbusiness.com/author/phil-klutts, where I published a monthly column of business and leadership-focused books. I read a couple dozen books each year, and wanted to share my most recent read with you because I think it is incredibly relevant, well-written, and discusses vital skills for leaders. We all face uncertainty, complexity, and volatility. Leaders need the knowledge, ability, and...

You’re standing behind the podium. Eyes are on you and you start speaking. Suddenly, that piercing squeal of feedback cuts through the room. What’s your instinct? Most people step back. It feels like the right thing to do—move away from the noise, create distance, let the moment pass. But here’s the thing: that instinct is wrong. Every week I tell our volunteers at church to lean into the mic and speak loudly when they hear feedback on the mic. Pulling away is a natural response but it...
