A dose of my own medicine

Clarity and Confidence

I was reminded of why I focus on clarity and confidence in a couple of different instances this week. My coaching and advisory services focus on these two words because I have found they are most often what hold people back from accomplishing the goals they've set out to accomplish.

In one situation, I was helping a client work through identifying clear next steps to reach his goals. Most people know they need to have a clear vision and measurable goals, but often get frustrated when they can't move from where they are to reach where they want to be. Helping my client discover the steps to his goal and how to make incremental progress is all about clarity: knowing exactly what to do next.

Another situation arose this week where I personally was struggling with the confidence to work on a project. I knew the steps and exactly what I needed to be doing. But my headspace was cluttered with the fear and what-ifs that come with a big project. I let those thoughts distract and hold me up instead of executing the steps. I needed a coach, in this case it was my wife, to talk through the situation and help me clear the noise so I was confident to proceed.

Sometimes we aren't sure what to do. Other times, we need the confidence to do what we know we should.

Use the clarity and confidence framework to guide you through your next hesitation or frustration. And let me know if you need a professional coach to help!

Thanks for reading,

Phil

I really enjoy the work I get to do with business leaders. I had two conversations yesterday with leaders who are looking to hire an employee. They were different conversations with leaders in very different circumstances. The fun part is that my experience and professional training fit both, and I really love getting to use what I have been blessed with. Leader A is an entrepreneur who has built his first business to the point of needing to hire help. He's successful and doing it all on his...

It's been almost a year since I last wrote a book review. Most of my past reviews can be found on edmondbusiness.com/author/phil-klutts, where I published a monthly column of business and leadership-focused books. I read a couple dozen books each year, and wanted to share my most recent read with you because I think it is incredibly relevant, well-written, and discusses vital skills for leaders. We all face uncertainty, complexity, and volatility. Leaders need the knowledge, ability, and...

You’re standing behind the podium. Eyes are on you and you start speaking. Suddenly, that piercing squeal of feedback cuts through the room. What’s your instinct? Most people step back. It feels like the right thing to do—move away from the noise, create distance, let the moment pass. But here’s the thing: that instinct is wrong. Every week I tell our volunteers at church to lean into the mic and speak loudly when they hear feedback on the mic. Pulling away is a natural response but it...
